Pontoon is a very unusual variant of blackjack and it can be confusing to play if you have never done so before. The rules are very important in this game and they directly figure into making moves you would not normally make in any other blackjack game. That being said, it is a very fun version to play and has some benefits not seen in other games.
What make Pontoon different?
Well lets start out with the obvious. You don't get to see either of the dealer's cards. This means you essentially playing against yourself. The dealer will check for a Pontoon, which is what the blackjack is called in this game.
The big rule in Pontoon - you must hit (called twisting) if you have a total of 14 or less in your hand. I have a strategy to the right for what to do when you have 15 through 21.
Pontoons pay 2 to 1 on bets, as opposed to 3 to 2 in normal blackjack. Also if you get a 5 card trick, meaning you hit three times, you also win 2 to 1 on your bet.
The big exception (and most frustrating part of the game) is rule number 2 - the dealer wins all ties. This includes Pontoons and 5 card tricks. If you get a 5 card trick, the dealer gets to draw to try to match and beat your hand.
Another big rule that you need to know is that you can double down (called Buying) at any time during the hand. After you double, you can hit again (in fact you have to if your total is 14 or under).
